About Tammela

What are the main landmarks in Tammela?

Few Tampere districts hold so much. The Tampereen tuomiokirkko, the national-romantic cathedral, stands at the western edge of Tammela, and the Tampereen vanha kirkko, the wooden old church, sits nearby in the city core. Across the area the museums multiply.

The Muumimuseo gathers Tove Jansson's Moomin originals, while the Museokeskus Vapriikki packs a whole block with the Suomen Jääkiekkomuseo, the Suomen pelimuseo, and the Pirkanmaan maakuntamuseo under one roof. Other halls add to the spread: the Vakoilumuseo, the Mediamuseo Rupriikki, the Postimuseo, and the Tampereen luonnontieteellinen museo each draw their own visitors. Churches mark the skyline too.

The Kalevan kirkko rises in concrete to the east, the orthodox Pyhien Aleksanteri Nevskin ja Nikolauksen kirkko lifts its onion domes, and the Finlaysonin kirkko serves the old mill quarter. Monuments fill the gaps. The Kalevala-muistomerkki and the Punaisten hautamuistomerkki stand among the streets of this north-western part of Tampere, making Tammela the cultural heart of the Pirkanmaa region.

What is the history of Tammela?

Tammela grew as Tampere's working-class grid. Laid out east of the cathedral as the industrial city expanded, it filled with dense housing and a market square that became one of the district's anchors. Industry gave it museums.

As the mills closed, the Museokeskus Vapriikki took over old factory halls and the Werstas labour museum settled into the same quarter, turning this north-western part of Tampere into a museum district. The churches came with the city: the Tampereen tuomiokirkko and the Kalevan kirkko mark different stages in the long growth of Tampere across the Pirkanmaa region.

Where is Tammela?

Tammela lies in north-western Tampere in south-western Finland, a gridded inner district close to the cathedral square, with the Museokeskus Vapriikki and the museums of the Pirkanmaa region clustered nearby.
