Nalkala puts a bed at the southern end of central Tampere, close enough to Laukontori and the Ratina estuary that the water is part of the walk rather than a trip out. Hämeenkatu runs along the top. Rooms towards Hämeenpuisto sit on the western boundary, while those nearer Tammerkoski keep the lower rapids and Tampereen vanha kirkko in reach.
If you want Pyhäjärvi in view, take the Laukontori end.

The walk between the two ends of the district runs from Hämeenkatu down to the market square, with Hämeenpuisto closing the western side.
What is the history of Nalkala?
Two houses called Nalka gave the district its name; the land register of 1540 is where they appear. The street grid keeps its own record, with Hämeenkatu, Hallituskatu and Kuninkaankatu all bearing names given in the 19th century, the last of them for Gustav III of Sweden, who founded Tampere. Three names, still in use.

Where is Nalkala?
The lower reaches of Tammerkoski, the Ratina estuary and Pyhäjärvi bound Nalkala, with Hämeenpuisto closing it to the west.
