Rides made the name. Powerpark, the amusement park on the flat farmland of this corner of Ostrobothnia, draws the crowds with wooden coasters that have given the area a reputation few villages of its size could match. The Thunderbird climbs over the fields.

Alongside it the steel of Junker, Cobra and the Pitts Special twist above the rural plain, while the older Ylihärmän kirkko keeps a quieter mark on the settlement now folded into Kauhava.

Ylihärmä grew as a farming parish. Long a small church village on the Ostrobothnian plain in western Finland, it lived for generations by the land, its life turning around Ylihärmän kirkko and the farmsteads scattered through the fields, of which the protected Orrenmaa survives as one of the oldest. The neighbouring parish kept its own church.

Alahärmän kirkko marked the settlement next door, and the two villages shared the flat, open country that defines this part of Ostrobothnia. Change came slowly, then quickly. In the twenty-first century the amusement park of Powerpark rose on the farmland and turned a quiet rural name into a destination, drawing visitors to the coasters of Thunderbird, Junker, Cobra and the Pitts Special.

Administration followed its own course. Ylihärmä lost its standing as a separate municipality when it was joined, with Alahärmä and Kortesjärvi, into the town of Kauhava, and the old village became one corner of a larger whole in South Ostrobothnia.

Buses serve the church villages around Ylihärmän kirkko and Alahärmän kirkko, and the amusement park draws its own seasonal traffic across the fields of Ostrobothnia from far beyond the immediate district.
