Match days at the Yves du Manoir Stadium decide more about rooms in Colombes than anything else in the calendar, and the rest of the year the commune is a residential one. The centre is the safe choice. Streets around the Ancienne église Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul de Colombes and the Musée Roybet Fould put the shops, the museums and the daily traffic in one place.
Petit-Colombes reads differently. The quarter around église du Sacré-Cœur du Petit-Colombes and the streets by Église Sainte-Marie des Vallées are quieter and more residential, with beds harder to find. The towers change the arithmetic.
Cœur Défense stands among the office blocks a short way off, and the hotels built for that business, along with those at Courbevoie and Neuilly-sur-Seine, hold most of the rooms on this side of Paris. La Garenne-Colombes and Bois-Colombes press right up to the commune, each small and largely residential. Asnières-sur-Seine and Gennevilliers continue the ring. If you want an older town rather than the stadium, Argenteuil carries the basilique Saint-Denys d'Argenteuil and the Musée d'Argenteuil, and it makes a different kind of base.

What is the history of Colombes?
One church marks the start. Ancienne église Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul de Colombes belonged to a village northwest of Paris, and the commune around it stayed small until the city's growth reached this far out. The maison impressionniste records a later chapter.
Its name keeps the memory of painting in these suburbs, and the Musée Roybet Fould gathers the pictures that came with it. Then the streets multiplied. New quarters needed new parishes, so église du Sacré-Cœur du Petit-Colombes and Église Sainte-Marie des Vallées were built for districts that had not existed when the old church served the whole commune.
Sport arrived on a grand scale. The Yves du Manoir Stadium was built on a scale the commune has never repeated, and the Centre sportif des Courtilles, patinoire des Courtilles and complexe sportif Smirlian followed at a smaller one. Archives and local history followed, at La contemporaine and the Atelier de l'histoire.
The towers came last. Cœur Défense belongs to the office district that grew up beside Courbevoie, and the same decades filled Bois-Colombes, La Garenne-Colombes, Gennevilliers and Asnières-sur-Seine with the streets that join them all. Argenteuil kept its basilique Saint-Denys d'Argenteuil through all of it.
Where is Colombes?
Colombes lies in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, ten kilometres and a little more from the centre, with no break in the built-up area on any side. The commune has no edge of its own. La Garenne-Colombes and Bois-Colombes take their names from it, while Courbevoie, Asnières-sur-Seine, Gennevilliers and Argenteuil close the ring around the rest.
Neuilly-sur-Seine and its église Saint-Jacques de Neuilly-sur-Seine mark the way in toward the capital. Île-de-France covers all of it.
What is the climate of Colombes?
Colombes gets the same temperate year as the rest of Île-de-France, which is why the Yves du Manoir Stadium can run an outdoor season from one end of the calendar to the other. Snow is a rarity. The colder months push the crowds indoors to the patinoire des Courtilles and the Centre sportif des Courtilles instead.

How do you get to Colombes?
Colombes sits ten kilometres out. The run in to the centre of Paris crosses nothing but suburb, passing Courbevoie, Asnières-sur-Seine or Neuilly-sur-Seine depending on the road taken, and the whole of it is continuous city. Argenteuil and Gennevilliers lie on the outward side.
La Garenne-Colombes and Bois-Colombes are close enough that the boundary is a matter of street signs, and the Yves du Manoir Stadium gives the commune its clearest marker. Cœur Défense shows from further off.
