Neuilly-sur-Seine makes a calm and well-heeled base just outside Paris, and where you stay turns on which edge of the town you want. The eastern side runs up to the Périphérique and the city limit, closest to Paris itself, with the avenue that continues the axis toward the capital lined with shops and cafes. Base yourself here to be nearest the centre.
The metro and the fast roads into Paris are minutes away, and the walk across the ring toward the western districts of the capital is short. The southern edge borders the Bois de Boulogne, greener and quieter, with the Jardin d'Acclimatation, the Louis Vuitton Foundation and the park's paths at the door for anyone travelling with children or seeking calm. Woods win here.
Stay on this side if you want them rather than the traffic of the boulevard. Toward the Seine on the north and west the residential streets run down to the river, a leafy and expensive quarter of villas and apartment blocks strung along the quiet quays. Neuilly is small and uniformly well connected, so the real choice is between the Paris-facing avenue, the woodland edge and the riverbank.

What is the history of Neuilly-sur-Seine?
Neuilly-sur-Seine grew from a riverside village on the road west out of Paris. The Seine made the place. A crossing and a ferry once carried the route over the river here, and the settlement that gathered around it took the water into its very name, Neuilly-sur-Seine, the Neuilly on the Seine.
For long it stood as open country beyond the walls of the capital. As Paris expanded, Neuilly was swept into the ring of western suburbs and became one of the most sought-after addresses of the Hauts-de-Seine. The Bois de Boulogne on its southern side was laid out as a great wooded park, and the Jardin d'Acclimatation opened within it as a garden and pleasure ground.
The grand avenue continuing the Paris axis ran through the town, lining it with fine buildings. Neuilly kept its separate identity even as the city closed around it, a distinct commune held between the Périphérique, the woods and the Seine.

Neuilly-sur-Seine lies immediately west of Paris, in the Hauts-de-Seine department of the Île-de-France region. The Seine loops around its northern and western sides, while the Bois de Boulogne closes the south and the Périphérique runs along the eastern boundary against the capital.
