Barca is a planned residential quarter in the western part of Bologna, a few kilometres out from the historic centre. It grew up in the early 1960s. Low apartment blocks and green courtyards near the Reno river give the area a mid-century character, laid out on flat ground rather than the medieval lanes of the old town. The Ducati Museum sits just west in neighbouring Borgo Panigale, while the wooded hill of the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca closes the view to the southeast.

Barca is first of all a place people live, not a hotel district. Lodging is thin across Barca. What rooms exist are small B&Bs rather than large hotels, and most travellers sleep in central Bologna instead.
Staying in the quarter suits visitors with a specific reason to be on the western side, a Ducati Museum tour, a show at Fondazione MAST, or the walk up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. After dark it is quiet and residential, and buses along the main road reach the historic core in a short ride.

What are the main landmarks in Barca?
The best-known sight near Barca is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, the pilgrimage church on the hill reached by Bologna's long hillside portico. That covered walk meets the road at the arco del Meloncello, a curving 18th-century arch. It marks the foot of the climb.
Closer to the flats, the Ducati Museum traces the motorcycle marque built in the adjoining Borgo Panigale, while the Fondazione MAST runs contemporary art and photography shows on the western fringe. The Torre di Maratona, a brick tower beside the city stadium, rises to the east, and the monumental tombs of the Certosa cemetery lie between.
What is the history of Barca?
For most of its past this was open ground on the plain west of Bologna, farmland running down toward the Reno river. Houses came late. The quarter was laid out from 1962 as planned housing for a growing industrial city, part of the postwar spread beyond the old walls.
Its neighbour Borgo Panigale had already drawn the Ducati works, whose motorcycles the Ducati Museum records. The hill above was far older, its Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca tied to the city since the 18th century by a long climbing portico.
Where is Barca?
The quarter sits on Bologna's western edge, on the plain by the Reno river. Borgo Panigale adjoins it to the west. To the northeast, the cypress walls of the Certosa cemetery and the Torre di Maratona rise beside the city's stadium.
The ground climbs away to the southeast toward the wooded hill that carries the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca high above the plain.
