What is the history of Santo Stefano?
The Santo Stefano Church is among the oldest Christian sites in Bologna, its buildings begun in the early Middle Ages and expanded by Benedictine monks over several centuries. Tradition holds that its cluster of shrines was laid out to echo the holy places of Jerusalem. The surrounding streets grew into a quarter of religious houses and noble palaces during the medieval commune.
The name endured. In the 2016 reorganisation of Bologna's districts, Santo Stefano became one of the city's six quartieri.
Where is Santo Stefano?
The district fills the southeast of Bologna's walled centre, then climbs into the hills toward Porta Santo Stefano. Strada Maggiore runs through its northern edge, carrying the porticoed route out to Porta Maggiore and the basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi. Piazza Maggiore and San Petronio Basilica sit just to the west.
