About Santo Stefano
What are the main landmarks in Santo Stefano?
The district's signature sight is the Santo Stefano Church, the complex of the Seven Churches that grew around an early shrine to Bologna's first martyrs. Along Strada Maggiore stands the basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi, its long portico opening onto the street. Two more medieval churches anchor the quarter: San Giovanni in Monte on its low rise, and the Madonna del Baraccano beside the old gate.
Piazza Maggiore lies close by. From there it is a short walk to San Petronio Basilica and the Basilica of Saint Francis.
What is the history of Santo Stefano?
The Santo Stefano Church is among the oldest Christian sites in Bologna, its buildings begun in the early Middle Ages and expanded by Benedictine monks over several centuries. Tradition holds that its cluster of shrines was laid out to echo the holy places of Jerusalem. The surrounding streets grew into a quarter of religious houses and noble palaces during the medieval commune.
The name endured. In the 2016 reorganisation of Bologna's districts, Santo Stefano became one of the city's six quartieri.
Where is Santo Stefano?
The district fills the southeast of Bologna's walled centre, then climbs into the hills toward Porta Santo Stefano. Strada Maggiore runs through its northern edge, carrying the porticoed route out to Porta Maggiore and the basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi. Piazza Maggiore and San Petronio Basilica sit just to the west.
