What is the history of Borgo Panigale?
The name marks an old roadside settlement, a borgo strung along the road that leaves Bologna to the west. For centuries it was a farming community outside the city, with its own parish churches such as the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. Its modern character came from industry.
The Ducati company built its works here early in the twentieth century and turned to motorcycles after the Second World War, when the bombed factory was rebuilt. As Bologna spread outward, Borgo Panigale was absorbed into the city as one of its western districts.
Where is Borgo Panigale?
Borgo Panigale spreads across the flat western edge of Bologna, on the plain beyond the built-up centre. The Reno river runs down its western side, marking the boundary with Casalecchio di Reno, while the Via Emilia Ponente cuts through it from the city. Casteldebole sits by the river.
