About Porto - Saragozza
What are the main landmarks in Porto - Saragozza?
The district's signal landmark is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, the hilltop pilgrimage church reached by a covered walkway of hundreds of arches. That walkway crosses the arco del Meloncello, a curved arch where the portico steps over the road out of town. Churches fill much of the rest.
In the western centre stand the Basilica of Saint Francis and San Paolo Maggiore, both medieval foundations. Along the old canals, the Bologna Museum of Modern Art and the Cineteca di Bologna anchor the arts quarter. San Petronio Basilica marks the eastern edge, on Piazza Maggiore.
What is the history of Porto - Saragozza?
The two names record two different pasts. Porto recalls the inland harbour that once linked Bologna to the Reno and the Po through a network of canals, powering mills and silk works along the water. Saragozza takes its name from the western road and city gate, from which pilgrims once climbed to the Madonna di San Luca.
Over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that route was roofed with a continuous portico and carried across the road by the arco del Meloncello. The former Porto and Saragozza zones were joined into one administrative quartiere in 2016.
Where is Porto - Saragozza?
Porto - Saragozza wraps the western side of Bologna's historic core. Its central axis is Via Saragozza, the porticoed road that passes through the old city gate, meets the arco del Meloncello, and climbs the Colle della Guardia. To the north, the former Porto zone traces the line of the Canale di Reno, where the Manifattura delle Arti occupies reclaimed factory and canal land.
The Santo Stefano district lies to the east. Beyond the walls, wooded slopes take over.
