San Donato - San Vitale is one of Bologna's six administrative boroughs. It covers the eastern side of the city. Drawn in 2016 from the merger of the older San Donato and San Vitale districts, it takes its two names from medieval gates on the ring road, and its inner end folds in the university quarter around San Giacomo Maggiore and the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna.

The university quarter holds two of the biggest: San Giacomo Maggiore, a Gothic basilica on Via Zamboni, and the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, the region's main picture gallery. Along Strada Maggiore, the porticoed spine running southeast, stand Santi Bartolomeo e Gaetano near the medieval towers, the International Museum and Library of Music, and the basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi.
San Martino stands among the northern lanes. Just west, in the civic core, rise San Petronio Basilica and Bologna Cathedral.

The borough itself is young. Bologna formed it in 2016 by merging the former San Donato and San Vitale districts, part of a redrawing that cut the city's boroughs from nine to six. Both names echo two of Bologna's medieval gates, Porta San Vitale and Porta San Donato, which once guarded the eastern roads out of town.
The San Vitale side grew into Bologna's university quarter, threaded with old college buildings. Beyond the gates, the San Donato side stayed open farmland until factories and housing filled it out.

The borough occupies the eastern wedge of Bologna, running outward from the ring of avenues that traces the line of the demolished city walls. Its inner edge holds the university quarter along Via Zamboni and the porticoed Strada Maggiore, the old road out to the eastern gates. Beyond the walls it widens northeast. Navile borders it to the north, and the Savena borough closes it off on the south.
