The San Ruffillo railway stop and the ring road make the historic centre of Bologna a quick hop, which suits drivers and budget-minded visitors.
Nightlife is scarce here. Most tourists booking Bologna are better served by a room inside the walls, using Savena as a calmer, cheaper fallback.

What are the main landmarks in Savena?
Savena keeps its sights low-key. The Giardino della Lunetta Gamberini is the district's main open space, a public park laid out on former farmland east of Via Toscana. Each old village kept its church: Santa Maria Annunziata di Fossolo, the Chiesa di San Giacomo della Croce del Biacco, and the Chiesa di San Ruffillo to the south.
Closer to the ring road stands Santa Maria Lacrimosa degli Alemanni, on Via Mazzini. For a museum, visitors cross into neighbouring San Lazzaro di Savena, which holds the Luigi Donini prehistoric museum.
What is the history of Savena?
For centuries the land east of the Torrente Savena lay in farm villages outside Bologna, each clustered around its parish: San Ruffillo, Fossolo, Croce del Biacco. As the city outgrew its walls, these hamlets were swallowed by expanding suburbs and market gardens gave way to housing. Bologna drew the modern quartiere of Savena in 1985, binding the scattered settlements into one administrative district named for the river on its edge.
The old parish churches still stand. Post-war building filled the gaps between them with apartment blocks and the Giardino della Lunetta Gamberini.
Where is Savena?
Savena covers the southeast quarter of Bologna, bounded on the east by the Torrente Savena, the seasonal torrent that gives the district its name. Its spine is Via Mazzini, with Via Toscana branching south toward San Ruffillo and the first hills. The inner neighborhoods are Fossolo and Croce del Biacco.
Northward the quartiere adjoins the San Vitale district; to the east lies the separate comune of San Lazzaro di Savena. Trains stop at San Ruffillo.
