What is the history of Ceglie del Campo?
Ceglie del Campo is the site of Caelia, the Peucetian town Greek writers called Kailia, walled between the fifth and fourth centuries BC with a circuit of five kilometres and four gates. Bari's people took refuge in the village around its castle in 1156, when William I of Sicily besieged their city. The old name held until 1863, when Ceglie added del Campo to end the muddle with Ceglie Messapica near Ostuni.
Independence ended in 1928. A royal decree that February folded Ceglie and Carbonara di Bari into Bari, and a council resolution of 1970 divided the city into 17 quartieri, Ceglie among them.
