Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Murat holds the centre's hotels. The grid of straight streets between the railway and the seafront puts a traveller within walking distance of Teatro Margherita, the Pinacoteca metropolitana di Bari, and the lanes of the Città vecchia next door. San Nicola is the older alternative. Choosing Murat trades the walled lanes for wide pavements, shopfronts, and a short flat walk to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas whenever the old quarter is the reason for the trip.

What are the main landmarks in Murat?
Teatro Margherita stands on the water at the quarter's northern edge. Palazzo dell'Acqua and the Pinacoteca metropolitana di Bari belong to the newer half of the centre, the civic and cultural addresses the city raised on ground the walls never enclosed. Santa Maria del Carmine sits inland.
The great medieval names, the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Castello Normanno-Svevo, stand across the boundary in the Città vecchia, close enough to reach on foot from any Murat street.
What is the history of Murat?
Murat is the newer half of Bari's centre. The quarter and the Città vecchia are counted together as that centre, one an expansion of straight streets running back to the railway, the other the walled ground that Bari calls San Nicola. Murat's boundary with San Nicola still shows on the ground.
Bari's administrative map fixed Murat as a quarter in 1970, giving formal edges to a division any walk across the boundary already makes plain.
