Where to stay in Japigia

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

The Palaflorio has no hotel row. Anyone booking a bed in Japigia is choosing the residential edge of Bari over the older centre, and the usual reason for doing so is an event at the Palaflorio. The blocks around chiesa di San Marco and chiesa di Sant'Anna run to flats and parish halls rather than reception desks, so the case for sleeping out here is space, parking and a quick run back into the city.

If you are here for one of those events, the walk home beats a drive in from the centre.

About Japigia

What are the main landmarks in Japigia?

The Sacrario militare dei Caduti Oltremare is the weightiest building in Japigia, a shrine to the fallen overseas that sits well outside the ordinary run of a residential quartiere. The Palaflorio pulls the crowds. Parishes account for most of the rest, from chiesa di San Gaetano and chiesa di San Ciro to chiesa di San Luca, chiesa della Resurrezione, chiesa di San Marco, chiesa di San Sabino and chiesa di Sant'Anna.

Two museums close the list: the Museo di Scienze della Terra di Bari and the Museo Collezione di Fisica.

What is the history of Japigia?

Japigia is one of Bari's newer quartieri. Its founding year is 1970, and the administrative frame has moved since: the quartiere sat in the V circoscrizione before passing to the I municipio in 2014. Seven churches are listed inside it, chiesa di San Gaetano among them.

The heaviest of them is not a parish at all, since the Sacrario militare dei Caduti Oltremare ties Japigia to deaths that happened far from Bari, and the name states as much.

Where is Japigia?

Japigia spreads across the south-eastern periphery of Bari, part of the I municipio, with the Sacrario militare dei Caduti Oltremare standing inside its bounds.
