What are the main landmarks in San Giorgio?
San Giorgio keeps little that is monumental. Torre della Carnosa, a square tower of the Kingdom of Naples coastal watch line, stood on this shore and is destroyed. The chiesa di San Benedetto holds the parish, which sits in the XII vicariato of the Bari-Bitonto archdiocese alongside Japigia and Torre a Mare.
Rail came late and left early: the stazione di Bari San Giorgio opened on the Adriatic line in 1949, between the stops at Torre Quetta and Torre a Mare, and closed in 2006.
What is the history of San Giorgio?
San Giorgio was Triggiano's coast before it was Bari's. The comune held this littoral as its marina, and Law 17 of 1934 detached it along with Torre Pelosa, now Torre a Mare, and handed both to Bari. Two council resolutions in January 1970 then folded San Giorgio into the V circoscrizione with Japigia and Torre a Mare.
Municipio 1 replaced that frame in 2014.
