The first documented mention of Bieżanów is from 1212, in a family will, where it appears as Besanouno. The name is possessive. It comes from the personal name Bieżan, a fugitive in Old Polish.
A parish was erected in 1422 and the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary built with it. Casimir IV Jagiellon moved the village from Polish to Magdeburg law in 1464 at the chapter's request, and a nawsie core was laid out by the Serafa, with farmsteads down both sides of a long open square.

Bieżanów lies in the Kotlina Sandomierska. The ground is flat, broken by terrace steps the Vistula cut: Pleistocene over-flood terraces carry the old village, and Holocene floodplain terraces lie north of Bieżanów Nowy. A step of nearly ten metres separates them, between ulica Bieżanowska and the estate.
