Old Town packs Kraków's densest run of hotels inside the green ring of Planty Park, so almost every bed here sits within a short walk of the Sukiennice on the Main Market Square. The square is the pivot. Rooms on its frontages put St. Mary's Basilica and the Town Hall Tower at the door, while the quieter lanes toward the Wawel hill trade the evening noise for a stroll past St. Andrew's Church and the churches of the old university quarter.

What are the main landmarks in Old Town?
Few districts carry this many set pieces. The Main Market Square anchors the plan, its centre filled by the long Renaissance hall of the Sukiennice and framed by the leaning Town Hall Tower and the twin brick towers rising over the square. To the south the Wawel hill lifts Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral above the Vistula, the seat of Poland's kings.
The old walls survive in fragments. Their northern gap holds the round Kraków Barbican and the tall St. Florian's Gate, and the lanes behind them thread past Collegium Maius, the Czartoryski Museum, and the domed St. Mary's Basilica.
What is the history of Old Town?
The core is old, the borough young. As a named administrative unit the Old Town dates only from 1991, when Kraków was carved into modern districts, but the streets it covers were laid out on a medieval grid centuries earlier and the Wawel hill above the Vistula had already served as the seat of Poland's kings. Trade built the middle.
Merchants raised the Sukiennice across the Main Market Square, the university opened Collegium Maius nearby, and the town wrapped itself in walls whose survivors, St. Florian's Gate and the Kraków Barbican, still mark the old northern road. The line held.

Old Town covers the roughly five square kilometres inside Planty Park, the tree-lined ring that traces Kraków's vanished walls, sloping south to the Wawel hill above the Vistula.
