Krowodrza, Kraków — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Krowodrza is one of the eighteen districts of Kraków, in the western part of the city, named after a former village of the same name.

About Krowodrza

Where to stay in Krowodrza

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Krowodrza wraps the north-western side of Kraków, close enough that the Old Town sits within a short walk of its southern edge. Beds cluster in a few pockets. Visitors who base themselves here tend to pick the ring below Planty Park for the walk into the centre, the western parkland around Zwierzyniec and the Kościuszko Mound for green quiet, or the accommodation strip along Highway 79 to the north for a cheaper road-side bed.

The parkland begins close by.

About Krowodrza

What are the main landmarks in Krowodrza?

The Kościuszko Mound stands over the western parkland of Zwierzyniec, an earthwork raised in memory of Tadeusz Kościuszko. Views open across Kraków. Rakowicki Cemetery lies toward the eastern side, one of the city's great burial grounds, while the green ring of Planty Park skirts the district's southern boundary and carries walkers on toward the Old Town beyond.

Kraków's medieval core waits a short walk south.

What is the history of Krowodrza?

Krowodrza takes its name from a village that once stood apart from Kraków, on farmland outside the walls. The village came first. As Kraków grew through the early twentieth century it engulfed the surrounding neighbourhoods, drawing Krowodrza and the fields west of the river into the expanding city, and the old village name settled on the wider ground it became.

The modern district was drawn in 1991.

Where is Krowodrza?

Krowodrza covers the western part of Kraków, north of the Wisła, its ground climbing gently toward the parkland of Zwierzyniec and the mound above it.
