Nowa Huta, Kraków — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Nowa Huta is Kraków's easternmost district, a socialist-realist town built from 1948 around Plac Centralny, east of the Old Town.

About Nowa Huta

Where to stay in Nowa Huta

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Nowa Huta is a residential district of Kraków, not a lodging hub. Rooms are in short supply across this planned quarter. Most visitors sleep in and around the Old Town and ride the tram east to Plac Centralny, the arcaded square from which the planned quarter fans out toward Mogiła Abbey and the Vistula River.

Stay near the square for the socialist-realist streets. Come out for the day.

About Nowa Huta

What are the main landmarks in Nowa Huta?

Nowa Huta wears two histories side by side. Plac Centralny anchors the planned quarter, its arcades opening onto Kino Światowid and the Nowa Huta Museum, while the PRL Museum records the socialist decades in full. The Lord's Ark Church rises to the north.

Older still is Mogiła Abbey, the Cistercian house whose grounds and Holy Cross Basilica in Kraków Mogiła predate the steelworks by more than seven centuries.

What is the history of Nowa Huta?

The district began in 1948. Planners laid Nowa Huta out from scratch as a model workers' town for Kraków, its avenues radiating from Plac Centralny in strict socialist-realist order. The steelworks drew tens of thousands to the new streets.

Faith and dissent followed the workers here, and the long fight to raise The Lord's Ark Church, marked by the Pomnik Krzyża Nowohuckiego and later the Solidarność Monument, turned the planned quarter into a stage for opposition. It absorbed the older village of Mogiła.
