Campus decides most stays here. Rooms near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill put the Ackland Art Museum, the Coker Arboretum and the bars along the edge of the campus within a short walk of each other. It suits you if a game at Boshamer Stadium or an evening out is the reason for coming.
The Kidzu Children's Museum helps with children. Carrboro is the other choice. The old mill town lies immediately to the west, adjoining Chapel Hill, and its shops, restaurants and nightlife run to a rhythm of their own rather than the campus one.
This suits you if the mill-town side appeals more than the university. Orange County holds most of the town, Durham the rest. Beds in Durham or Raleigh put the other corners of the Research Triangle first, leaving Chapel Hill as a day trip for the Thomas F. Lloyd Historic District and the Unsung Founders Memorial.

Chapel Hill dates from 1793. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has shaped the place for so long that its campus holds the middle of the town rather than an outskirt, which is unusual among towns of this size. Older streets survive around it, gathered in the Thomas F. Lloyd Historic District.
Carrboro grew as a mill town on the western side, and its shops and restaurants kept a character of their own, which is why the two places are usually described together. Memorials came later. The Unsung Founders Memorial and the Chapel Hill Nine both stand as named markers in the town, and St. Paul AME Church belongs to the same layer of the record.
Government followed the growth. Chapel Hill is an incorporated municipality with ground in both Orange County and Durham, and the census of the United States counts it across the two counties alike. The Research Triangle formed around it.
Together with Durham the town makes up one metropolitan area, and with Raleigh added the three mark the corners of the Triangle. Chapel Hill ranks 17th among North Carolina's municipalities for size, the smallest of the three corner towns.
