The Mount Auburn Historic District is residential ground, so the room stock for it stands downhill in Downtown Cincinnati and Over-the-Rhine rather than along the ridge. Corryville holds beds to the north. The Christ Hospital fronts Auburn Avenue inside the district, and a room up on the ridge suits you mainly if the hospital is why you came. For everyone else the approach is a climb on foot from Over-the-Rhine, or a turn off Interstate 71 at William Howard Taft Road.

Auburn Avenue carries almost everything the Mount Auburn Historic District is listed for. The William Howard Taft National Historic Site keeps the Greek Revival house at 2038 Auburn Avenue where the twenty-seventh president was born. The Henry Powell House stands at 2209 Auburn Avenue, recast in 1882 to a Samuel Hannaford design that gave it a mansard roof.
Hopkins Park breaks the row. Its ground was given to the city in 1866 on condition that nothing be built on it. The Cincinnati Art Museum in Eden Park and the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden off Vine Street get filed under Mount Auburn, and neither stands here.
What is the history of Mount Auburn Historic District?
The Mount Auburn Historic District covers ground called Keys' Hill until 1837, when the hill was platted as a town and renamed for Boston's Mount Auburn Cemetery. Prominent Cincinnatians had begun moving up by 1826, buying height and clean air above the smoke of the river basin. Cincinnati annexed the suburb in 1849.
Houses along Auburn Avenue date from 1819 to the turn of the century and run through Federal, Greek Revival, Italian Villa, Romanesque Revival and Georgian Revival work. The district entered the National Register of Historic Places on March 28, 1973.
