Capitol Hill keeps more houses than hotels, and the beds that do exist sit on the slope between Eagle Gate and the Utah State Capitol rather than along the wider downtown blocks. Most visitors book below the hill, near the Beehive House and the Church History Museum, then walk up. Eagle Gate marks the foot.
Stay on the hill itself if you want quiet evenings, the Pioneer Memorial Museum at the door, and morning light on the Capitol dome before the tour buses arrive.

What are the main landmarks in Capitol Hill?
The Utah State Capitol gives the hill its name and its skyline, a domed block set above the city on its own terraced grounds. Monuments ring the dome. The Mormon Battalion Monument, the 145th Field Artillery Monument and the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial all stand on the Capitol lawns, while the Pioneer Memorial Museum fills a nearby building with holdings from the settlement years.
Below the crest, Eagle Gate arches over the road, with the Beehive House and Lion House just beyond it.
What is the history of Capitol Hill?
Houses came before the dome. The Nelson Wheeler Whipple House and the William Culmer House survive from the decades when this slope above Salt Lake City filled with private homes rather than public buildings. Eagle Gate stood at the foot of the climb.
The Utah State Capitol came later and redefined the neighbourhood, giving Capitol Hill its name and the terraced grounds that separate the dome from the streets below.
