Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Fairpark is houses rather than hotels, so a stay here means a room downtown in Salt Lake City and a ride back out. That ride is short. Fairpark station stands on North Temple beside the fairground, on the TRAX Green Line that runs from the airport through downtown to West Valley City.
Pick the area if you want a quiet base within reach of the Jordan River and the Northwest Recreation Center rather than a hotel lobby. Poplar Grove to the south and Rose Park to the north make the same trade.

What are the main landmarks in Fairpark?
Fairpark keeps its National Register listings on ordinary residential streets. The Thomas and Mary Hepworth House stands on 200 North, a two-story Italianate I-house of 1877 that reached the National Register more than a century later. Farther along the same street, the Free Church of Tonga holds a former branch library of 1921.
The Twenty-Ninth Ward LDS Meetinghouse went up on 400 North, chapel and recreation hall added in separate phases of brick. Larger than all of them is the Utah State Fairpark, whose exhibition halls were listed on the National Register in 1981. Nothing here is monumental.
What is the history of Fairpark?
Fairpark began as ten-acre blocks of the original Salt Lake City plat, laid out in eight lots each for a house, a garden, and outbuildings. Poor soil near the Jordan River held it back. The transcontinental railroad changed that in 1869, and the rail lines along 500 West drew industry, work, and a working-class street grid west of them.
The state fair arrived in 1902, when the legislature bought the ground and called it Agriculture Park. Bungalows followed the Victorian cottages. Post-war houses closed the gaps.
The whole quarter was listed on the National Register in 2001 as the Salt Lake City Northwest Historic District.

Fairpark runs west from the rail lines at 500 West to the Jordan River, bounded by North Temple on the south and 600 North on the north.
