Eagle Gate marks the low corner of The Avenues, and which side of it a night falls on decides nearly everything about the stay. Downtown Salt Lake City keeps the front desks, a few blocks from the Church History Museum and The Leonardo. The numbered avenues above hold houses.
It suits you if a private let on the upper streets, on the grade the surveyors cut in the early 1850s, is worth the walk back down past the Lion House and the Beehive House.

What are the main landmarks in The Avenues?
The Avenues roster leans to house names. The William Culmer House, the Simon Bamberger House and the David Keith Mansion and Carriage House are addresses, not attractions, and the Frederick A.E. Meyer House belongs to the same run of frontages.
Eagle Gate closes the low corner, with the Lion House, the Beehive House and the First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City along that bottom edge. The museums belong elsewhere: the Church History Museum, The Leonardo, the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the Pioneer Memorial Museum stand below the grade, and the Natural History Museum of Utah lies east under the Wasatch Mountains.
What is the history of The Avenues?
Surveyors cut the first lots here in the early 1850s. Those lots were the first in Salt Lake City to leave the original ten-acre block grid, taking smaller blocks and narrower streets than the plat the rest of the city was laid out on. The Avenues broke the grid first.
No founding year is set on the neighborhood itself; what stands in for one is that plat, and the older names it carries, the Simon Bamberger House, the David Keith Mansion and Carriage House, the William Culmer House, are houses standing on those tighter lots.
