The landmark record here is a roll of houses, not monuments. In and around the Harvard-Yale area the National Register of Historic Places lists the Fortunato Anselmo House, the George Arbuckle House, the Keyser-Cullen House and the Howard and Marian Bennion House, each carrying the name of an early owner. Brick and clipped lawns do the rest.
Bigger draws sit past the boundary streets: the Natural History Museum of Utah and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on the university side, Hogle Zoo further east along Sunnyside Avenue, and the Sugar House Monument south of 1300 South.
What is the history of Yalecrest?
Building began in the 1910s. Most of Yalecrest went up across the 1920s and 1930s, when developers laid out blocks of period-revival houses and named the streets for Ivy League colleges, while the easternmost stretch toward 1900 East filled in only after the Second World War. The record is not all genteel.
Green-lining in the 1930s reserved the ground for upper-class white buyers, a restriction written into how the streets grew. Listing on the National Register of Historic Places followed in 2007.
