What is the history of Tandil?
Tandil began as a frontier fort. On the edge of the settled land, a fort was raised in the granite hills to hold the frontier of the pampa, and a town grew below it on the plain. A strange rock drew wonder.
On a hilltop above the town a great stone balanced for ages on a narrow point, rocking but never falling, until at last it toppled and crashed, and the town raised a copy where it had stood. Settlers made the town flourish. Europeans came to the hills and the plain, quarrying the granite and farming the land, and they brought the arts of cheese and cured meat that made the town famous for its salami and picada.
Faith climbed the hill. On a slope above the streets the people built a great church and a way of the cross, and crowds came at Easter to the hill, so that Tandil lived by its farms, its stone, and its pilgrims, keeping its sierras, its salami, and its church. The pilgrims still climb the hill.
