Steenbrugge lies along the Kanaal Gent-Brugge, and the wijk grew beside that water as a residential quarter of Assebroek. The Steenbrugge bank carries no hotel row. Rooms sit three and a half kilometres north, inside the old town of Brugge, where the Sint-Salvatorskathedraal, the Gruuthusemuseum and the Church of Our Lady stand within a few streets of one another.
The Gentpoort end of the ramparts puts the canal ride back to Steenbrugge at its shortest.

Brugge keeps its monuments in the historic centre, three and a half kilometres north of the Kanaal Gent-Brugge bank at Steenbrugge. The Gentpoort marks the Gent road out. Behind it stand the Sint-Salvatorskathedraal, the Church of Our Lady and the Sint-Janshospitaal, whose wards hold Memling in Sint-Jan, while the Groeningemuseum and the Gruuthusemuseum keep their collections a few streets on.
Steenbrugge's own bank of the Kanaal Gent-Brugge holds none of them.

Assebroek reached Brugge as a deelgemeente, a municipality in its own right before the city absorbed it, and Steenbrugge is one of the wijken that came in with it. The wijk kept the Steenbrugge name. The Kanaal Gent-Brugge cut this ground into a bank on either side, and Steenbrugge took its shape from those banks rather than from a road out of Brugge.
