Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Two halves, two different stays. The older streets around Byron Street North and Trent Street West put the heritage houses, the Durham Region offices, and the shops of the southern core within walking reach, which is the practical choice for a short visit built around the town itself. Most rooms sit in that half.
Anything closer to Lake Ontario trades that walkability for the shoreline and the open ground south of the built-up grid. Inverlynn and the Fothergill House are among the designated buildings that make that core worth an afternoon on foot. Brooklin is the inland alternative.
Rooms out there sit among farmland, with Ashburn and Myrtle Station nearby and a drive of some length back down to the lake, which suits arrivals by car more than anyone without one. Ajax and Oshawa sit close on either side. Either neighbour widens the choice when Whitby itself is full, and the Greater Toronto Area behind them puts Toronto within reach of a day out for visitors willing to travel west.
Macedonian Village and Almond Village mark the quieter western and northern reaches, where beds thin out and the countryside starts in earnest.

Brooklin, Ashburn, Myrtle, and Macedonian Village keep their own names inside the municipal boundary, while the built-up south holds the offices, the shops, and the roads west toward Ajax.

What is the history of Whitby?
The founding year is 1855. That date marks the town's formal beginning on the north shore of Lake Ontario, and the surnames attached to its designated buildings belong to the generations that built outward from it. A Former Methodist church sits on the same register.
The John Watson House, the George Gilcrest House, and the Emanuel Sleep House still carry their builders' names on a roll that is the most detailed record the town keeps of its own nineteenth century. Growth came from outside the old grid. Ashburn, Brooklin, Myrtle, Myrtle Station, and Macedonian Village were rural settlements in their own right before the municipal boundary grew to hold them, and Almond Village still marks the western edge.
Farmland covers the north. The southern half turned urban as the Greater Toronto Area spread east from Toronto through Ajax, and Whitby took on the work of a commuter town while keeping the offices of Durham Region inside its limits. The Barnes House and the Shier-Willis House belong to that older stock, and the streets around them absorbed the region's administrative business.
Oshawa sits immediately east.
Where is Whitby?
Lake Ontario forms the southern limit. From that shoreline the municipality runs inland across a wide block of land, urban at the bottom and agricultural at the top, with Ajax closing it off on one side and Oshawa on the other. Brooklin sits well inland.
The distance to Toronto is short enough that the built-up strip along the water belongs to the Greater Toronto Area rather than to the countryside behind it.
What is the climate of Whitby?
Lake Ontario does the moderating here. Water that stays cool into early summer and warm into late autumn trims the sharpest edges off both ends of the year along the shore, while the inland stretch toward Brooklin and Myrtle sits outside that influence and swings further. Snow belongs to the winter half.
Warm, humid spells run through July and August, and the lake breeze reaches the southern streets first.
How do you get to Whitby?
Toronto lies 48 km west. The approach from that side runs through Ajax and into the built-up southern half of Whitby, and the same corridor continues east into Oshawa, so arrivals from either direction cross a continuous urban strip rather than open country. Durham Region ties the two together.
Reaching Brooklin, Ashburn, or Myrtle Station means turning inland from the water and leaving the densest edge of the Greater Toronto Area behind.
