What is the history of Waldstraßenviertel?
The Waldstraßenviertel went up during Leipzig's boom in the second half of the nineteenth century, when trade and industry swelled the city. Speculative builders filled the fields between Waldstraße and the Rosental with tall apartment houses for the prospering middle class. The war largely spared it.
Because those blocks survived, the Waldstraßenviertel came through as one of Germany's largest intact Gründerzeit ensembles, its historicist and Jugendstil facades still in place. Its name marks the old road to the woods.

Waldstraßenviertel fills the wedge of land northwest of Leipzig's centre, hemmed between the inner ring road and the Weiße Elster floodplain. Its spine is Waldstraße, the old road running north toward the Rosental parkland that gave the quarter its name. Gohlis lies past its northern streets. Lindenau sits across the Elster to the southwest, and the Leipzig Zoological Garden closes off the quarter's northern end.
