Barriada de Cañero is a district people live in rather than book into, and its own beds are few. Most travellers who want this side of Córdoba take a room along Avenida de Libia or in Santuario, the barrio immediately south, then come in by bus. Choose it if you want a working neighbourhood where the bars keep local hours and a car can be left at the kerb.
The grid is flat and low-rise. Buses stop on Plaza de Cañero, the Mezquita-Catedral stands about two and a half kilometres south-west, and the city's main railway station lies roughly three kilometres west.

Barriada de Cañero gathers its landmarks on one square, Plaza de Cañero, held between Calle de Fernando Camacho and Calle del Funcionario Lázaro Navajas. A fountain marks its middle. Palm rows stand around the rim, and a bust honours Fray Albino, the bishop whose housing association built the barrio.
The Parroquia de San Vicente Ferrer rises on the same square and was blessed in 1956; people here still call it the iglesia de Cañero. Parque Celia Méndez runs along the northern edge. The Mezquita-Catedral and the Roman bridge sit some two and a half kilometres off, in the old city.
What is the history of Barriada de Cañero?
Barriada de Cañero was laid out from 1951 on farmland given by Antonio Cañero, the Córdoba rejoneador it is named for. The bishop Fray Albino had founded the Asociación Benéfica La Sagrada Familia to buy land for cheap housing. General Franco handed over the first thousand keys on 29 April 1953.
Another 800 dwellings followed in February 1955. In all, 1,856 houses went up to the design of the municipal architect Carlos Sáenz de Santamaría, with two school groups, a church and a cinema-theatre. They repeated the single-family pattern of Campo de la Verdad.
Paving and drains came late. The mud earned it the old nickname barro Cañero.
