Campo de la Verdad-Miraflores is a residential barrio, so hotel beds are scarce and most visitors sleep across the water in central Córdoba. The pay-off is quiet. Apartments turn up along Avenida del Campo de la Verdad and in the lanes behind Calle Santo Cristo, five minutes from the foot of the Roman bridge, which carries walkers into the old city from neighbouring Fray Albino.

The Parque de Miraflores gives Campo de la Verdad-Miraflores its open ground, terraces that descend to the Guadalquivir on paving built for a river that floods. The sculpture called Salam stands among them. Beside the park on Calle Carmen Olmedo Checa stands the Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía, a contemporary art centre by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, its long facade turned to the water.
The Puente de Miraflores, a corten steel beam resting on one pier, lifts off the park toward the old city. Behind them the lanes off Calle Acera Mira al Río keep their low riverside houses.
What is the history of Campo de la Verdad-Miraflores?
Campo de la Verdad-Miraflores began as Saqunda, the Umayyad arrabal that filled this meander outside the walls of Qurtuba and took its name from a milestone on the Vía Augusta. Craftsmen built it in river cobbles. A rising against the emir Al-Hakam I ended it in 818, when the quarter was razed, its people driven out toward Fez and beyond, and rebuilding on the ground forbidden.
Augustinian friars later held the empty field, then called the campo de San Julián, and left it in 1328. The present name came from a fourteenth-century siege, when the Córdoban commander told his mother that the truth would be seen in the field.
Where is Campo de la Verdad-Miraflores?
Campo de la Verdad-Miraflores fills a meander on the left bank of the Guadalquivir, and the river bends round it to the north, west and east. Avenida del Campo de la Verdad closes it. Fray Albino starts on the far kerb, with the Torre de la Calahorra at its bridgehead.
Across the water lie the Catedral quarter to the north-west and El Arenal to the east.
