Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Santa Cruz has almost no beds. A night in the barriada means one of the roadside hostal-restaurants where the N-432 meets the village, and there is nothing else. The place is lived in rather than let out.
The surgery and the village shops sit around Plaza de Andalucía and Calle Ancha, and none of it was built for visitors. Walkers on the Camino Mozárabe come through between Espejo and Córdoba. If you want the Campiña at walking pace, take the room here; otherwise book in Córdoba, twenty kilometres up the road, and drive out.

Santa Cruz has one building of record. The silo de Santa Cruz went into service in 1983 for the Red Nacional de Silos y Graneros, holds seven thousand tonnes, and still stands over the roofs of the barriada. At the far end of the village the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación faces Plaza de Andalucía.
Street names carry the rest: Calle Montilla for the town Santa Cruz answered to for five centuries, Calle Espejo and Calle Córdoba for the roads out. Ategua, the Iberian and Roman city Julius Caesar took in 45 BC, lies six kilometres east across open country, outside the barriada.
What is the history of Santa Cruz?
Santa Cruz belonged to Montilla, not to Córdoba, for most of its recorded life. Alfonso Fernández de Córdoba, lord of Aguilar and Montilla, bought the place in 1492 from the lord of Guadalcázar, and it stayed Montilla's. The arrangement was awkward.
An island of one municipality sat inside another, with Montemayor and Córdoba between the village and its town hall. The Instituto Nacional de Colonización enlarged it in the 1950s by adding family smallholdings rather than founding anything new. The village voted for the change in 1993, and a decree of 16 July 1996 moved the enclave, some 195 hectares, from Montilla to Córdoba.
