About Centro District
What are the main landmarks in Centro District?
The Mezquita-Catedral anchors Centro District, its prayer hall begun in the 780s and a Renaissance nave cut into the middle of it in the sixteenth century. West of it the Judería keeps the Sinagoga de Córdoba on calle Judíos, and the pedestrian Calleja de las Flores ends in a small square. The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos holds the river edge.
Deeper into the Axerquía, Plaza de la Corredera closes a rectangle of arcades, the only enclosed square of its kind in Andalusia. One square holds two museums. Plaza del Potro carries the Museo Julio Romero de Torres and the Museo de Bellas Artes de Córdoba.
What is the history of Centro District?
Centro District stands on Roman Corduba, and the layers under it were never cleared away. The Templo romano de la calle Claudio Marcelo still holds its corner with Capitulares, and the Roman theatre lies beneath the Museo Arqueológico de Córdoba. Abd al-Rahman I founded the great mosque in the 780s.
Castile arrived in 1236. The conquerors consecrated the mosque instead of pulling it down, and Alfonso XI completed the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos in 1328. The Torre de la Malmuerta rose between 1404 and 1408 above Santa Marina.

Centro District runs from the Guadalquivir at Ronda de Isasa north across Córdoba, with Avenida de Vallellano on its west side and Ronda del Marrubial on its east.
