About Santa María de Trassierra

Where to stay in Santa María de Trassierra

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Santa María de Trassierra is a village of second homes rather than hotels, so most people who visit it sleep in Córdoba, some fifteen kilometres downhill. Beds up here are scarce. The road from the city climbs through holm oak and cork oak to Trassierra and the neighbouring settlements of Campoalegre and El Salado, close enough that the whole barriada works as a half-day trip rather than a base.

Stay in the sierra only if you have a car and want oak woods and stream paths rather than a short walk to dinner.

About Santa María de Trassierra

What are the main landmarks in Santa María de Trassierra?

The parish church of Santa María de Trassierra is the village's one listed monument, a Bien de Interés Cultural that began as a mosque. Its dedication names the village. Calle Fuente del Elefante, one of the streets below it, recalls a carved elephant waterspout found in these hills, whose tenth-century original stands in the Palacio Episcopal de Córdoba, down in the city.

The Baños de Popea lie outside the barriada, less than two kilometres north, where the Arroyo del Bejarano drops through a chain of pools in the Sierra Morena.

What is the history of Santa María de Trassierra?

Santa María de Trassierra supplied Roman Córdoba with water. The Aqua Augusta gathered its flow from springs in these hills, among them the Arroyo del Bejarano and the Veneros de Vallehermoso, and ran the catch almost entirely underground toward the city; the caliphs later reused the same channel to supply Madinat al-Zahra. A twelfth-century mosque stood here.

It became the parish church, and the barriada still carries its dedication as a name. Beatriz Enríquez de Arana was born in the village in 1465, and her son by Christopher Columbus was Hernando Colón.

Where is Santa María de Trassierra?

Santa María de Trassierra lies in the Sierra Morena northwest of Córdoba, with Campoalegre and El Salado adjoining and the Guadiato below to the north.
