Sector Sur is a residential barrio across the Guadalquivir from the old town of Córdoba. Its northern end opens onto Plaza de Andalucía, where the Puente de San Rafael comes down from the city centre and Avenida de Cádiz runs east to west. Deeper in, the streets are plainer.
Plaza del Mediodía sits among them, where Calle Algeciras and Calle Úbeda end. Stay here if you want the Puente romano a walk of about a kilometre north and a room away from the patio lanes of the Judería.

What are the main landmarks in Sector Sur?
Sector Sur centres on Plaza de Andalucía, where a fountain sits between Avenida de Cádiz and Avenida de Granada. The Puente de San Rafael arrives at that corner from the north bank. Plaza de Zaragoza is triangular, closed by Calle Úbeda, Calle Jaén and Calle Pontevedra.
Calle Algeciras ends at Plaza del Mediodía. The Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia stands on Calle Jerez, and Calle Motril runs from Calle de Ronda down to Avenida de Granada. The Torre de la Calahorra stands in Fray Albino, the barrio to the north-east, and the Puente romano crosses from there to the old town.
What is the history of Sector Sur?
Sector Sur began as the Zona Sur, an urbanisation the Córdoba council approved in February 1955. Services went in first. The ground, running from the Fray Albino barriada to the old Seville road, was laid out before a single building went up on it, a first for the city.
In July 1956 the council under Antonio Cruz-Conde bought the land from the Asociación Benéfica La Sagrada Familia, and it approved the scheme that November. Rafael de la Hoz and José Rebollo worked on blocks of up to eight storeys. The chronicler José María Rey Díaz proposed Andalusia for the main square and Andalusian towns for the streets.
