Fray Albino sits at the far end of the Roman bridge from the old city, with the Mezquita and the Alcázar standing on the opposite bank of the Guadalquivir. Beds gather along Avenida Fray Albino, the riverside road running southwest from the bridgehead, and on the quieter blocks behind the Avenida de la Diputación. Inland the barrio turns residential fast.

What are the main landmarks in Fray Albino?
Fray Albino holds the Torre de la Calahorra. The fortified gatehouse of Islamic origin guards the southern end of the Roman bridge, and its rooms opened as the Museo Vivo de al-Ándalus in 1987. Then the streets take over.
Calle Bajada del Puente drops from the tower into the barrio, reaching Plaza del Rastro and Plaza de Santa Teresa within two blocks. Deeper in, the Monumento a Fray Albino stands on Calle Infante Don Juan Manuel, the Parroquia San José Espíritu Santo opens onto Paseo Cristo del Descendimiento, and the Estadio San Eulogio takes a block off Calle Tenerife.
What is the history of Fray Albino?
Fray Albino was built as charity housing for Córdoba families without decent homes. The Asociación Benéfica La Sagrada Familia, founded on 5 February 1947 by the city's bishop, had the municipal architect Carlos Sáenz Santamaría draw the plans for a barriada of single-family houses on land the council gave up. Work ran in three phases.
The first houses changed hands on 9 October 1948. Older ground lies beneath: the left bank carried Saqunda, the Umayyad suburb razed after the revolt of 818, and the battle that named the Campo de la Verdad was fought across it.
