One marker stands out here. The Keltinmäen kirkko anchors this western part of Jyväskylä, rising near the streets that link Köhniö to the neighbouring quarter of Keltinmäki. Quiet ground fills the rest.

The district takes its further bearings from the city centre to the east and from the wider lakeland around it, reading as a residential corner well clear of the busier core in this part of central Finland.

The ground lay at the edge first. Western fringes of Jyväskylä stood beyond the old core before the streets reached them, and through the twentieth century homes spread across the slope until this quarter took its shape on the western side of the city. The Keltinmäen kirkko marked the rise.

As Jyväskylä grew outward across the central Finland lakeland, building reached the ground beside Keltinmäki and the quarter of Kortepohja, and Köhniö settled in as one of the residential western edges of the city.

Köhniö lies on the western side of Jyväskylä. It spreads across the ground beyond the city core, where the streets follow the slope toward the Keltinmäen kirkko and the lakeland opens out around the edges. From here the district runs back toward the centre of Jyväskylä and toward the neighbouring quarter of Keltinmäki, set among the western edges of the city in the central Finland lakeland.
