Jyväskylä grew westward over the years, and the ground here was built up as a planned residential area for the city. Kortepohja came together as a student and housing quarter on the western side, taking its place among districts like Keltinmäki and Viitaniemi. A parish church was raised to serve it.

Kortepohjan kirkko gave the district its own fixed point among the blocks.
