Taulumäki grew on a hill on the northern side of Jyväskylä, the high ground giving the quarter its name in central Finland. The rise set it apart. The brick Taulumäen kirkko went up on the crown to serve the northern parishes, and housing gathered on the slopes as the city spread out from the centre and the railway.

Below the hill the old rail works later turned to art at Galleria Ratamo, while the ridge of Vesilinna watched from the south. Taulumäki held its character as the hill-church district of the city.
