What is the history of Kuokkala?
Kuokkala lay as country ground on the south-eastern side of Jyväskylä, farmland across the water before the city reached it in central Finland. The land filled late. As Jyväskylä grew the quarter rose into one of its largest residential districts, blocks of housing spreading over the slopes and the Kuokkalan kirkko going up to serve the new neighbourhoods.
The campus at Mattilanniemi and the harbour quarter of Lutakko drew the centre toward this side of the water. Kuokkala settled into its role as a south-eastern residential district of the city.
