Pyynikinharju sets the choice. Beds sit thin on the ridge itself, so most visitors take a room in central Tampere and reach the reserve on foot from the east, a walk of minutes that ends at the paths, steps and lookouts above Pyhäjärvi. Rooms nearer Pispala suit slower stays.
The Pyynikin Trikoon torni end is the closest to the centre.

The ridge does the drawing. Pyynikin Trikoon torni and Varalan liikuntamuseo give the district its two named stops, one a tower on the slope and the other a museum of sport, both inside the reserve that covers Pyynikinharju. Walking paths link them.
The protected ground runs from the edge of central Tampere out towards Pispala.
What is the history of Pyynikki?
Ice built the ridge. Pyynikinharju is an esker of sand and gravel left by glacial meltwater, and it stands higher above the surrounding ground than any other esker in the world, which gives the district its whole shape. Building spread around it rather than over it.
The wooded crown was kept as a nature reserve, so Pyynikki is at once a district of Tampere and protected ground running out towards Pispala.

The Pyynikinharju ridge lifts the district some 85 metres above Pyhäjärvi, with central Tampere to the east and Pispala to the west.
