Where to stay in Pantin

Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.

Pantin arranges itself along the canal de l'Ourcq, and the choice of address comes down to the water, the old streets by the Église Saint-Germain de Pantin, or the roadways crossing the plain. Paris is minutes off. Beds near the canal put the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie and the Cité de la musique within an easy walk or a single hop.

The Musée de la musique sits with them. Rooms by the Église Saint-Germain de Pantin trade that for the quieter grain of the older commune. Visitors who need more choice can look to the ring of communes around Pantin, where Aubervilliers, Bobigny, Drancy, La Courneuve, Romainville, and Bagnolet each keep a parish church of their own.

The names are easy to follow. Notre-Dame-des-Vertus stands at Aubervilliers, the église de Tous-les-Saints de Bobigny at Bobigny, and the Église Saint-Yves des Quatre-Routes de La Courneuve on the same ring. The Église Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste de Drancy and the Église Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois de Romainville complete the set.

Belleville and Ménilmontant lie on the Paris side. Anyone drawn to the Pavillon Carré de Baudouin, the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Belleville, or the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Croix de Ménilmontant should weigh a room over that boundary instead.

About Pantin

What is Pantin known for?

The canal de l'Ourcq gives Pantin its through-line, with the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Cité de la musique, and the Musée de la musique all standing close by on the Paris side. Paris begins past the boundary. The Église Saint-Germain de Pantin holds the commune's own parish, and the Piscine de Pantin its own pool.

Le Plateau and the Maison de l'air add two further names. Roads and rail cut across the plain, and the canal de l'Ourcq runs with them toward Paris.

What are the main landmarks in Pantin?

Three institutions dominate the near ground: the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Cité de la musique, and the Musée de la musique. Pantin keeps its own. The Église Saint-Germain de Pantin, the Piscine de Pantin, the stade Raoul-Montbrand, and Le Plateau all carry the commune's name or its ground.

The Maison de l'air and the AF 447 memorial stand nearby. Swimming has three addresses. The Piscine Château-Landon, the Georges Vallerey swimming pool, and the espace sportif Pailleron cover it.

What is the history of Pantin?

Level ground shaped Pantin, a plain on the edge of Paris later opened by the canal de l'Ourcq, the Paris-Strasbourg railway line, and national roadways 2 and 3. The parish came before them. The Église Saint-Germain de Pantin carries the older dedication, the same name that the Église Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois de Romainville keeps on the neighbouring commune. Other parishes ring the same plain.

Notre-Dame-des-Vertus at Aubervilliers, the église de Tous-les-Saints de Bobigny, the Église Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste de Drancy, and the église Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles de Bagnolet all belong to that older layer. Industry and transport reshaped the commune, and the later additions read differently: the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie and the Cité de la musique, both within the same short reach. Music got its museum.

The Musée de la musique holds that collection, while Le Plateau and the Maison de l'air took later ground. Public pools mark the same era of building, from the Piscine de Pantin to the Piscine Château-Landon and the Georges Vallerey swimming pool. The tour hertzienne de Romainville stands over the neighbouring commune.

The AF 447 memorial keeps a more recent loss in view.

Where is Pantin?

Pantin covers barely five square kilometres of plain against the northeastern side of Paris, with the canal de l'Ourcq, the Paris-Strasbourg railway line, and national roadways 2 and 3 all crossing it. The ground barely rises. Aubervilliers, Bobigny, Romainville, Bagnolet, Drancy, and La Courneuve stand in the ring around it.

The centre of Paris lies a little over six kilometres away, close enough that the boundary matters more than the distance. Ménilmontant and Belleville sit beyond it.

What is the climate of Pantin?

Weather crosses the Pantin plain without much to stop it, and the temperate run of Île-de-France gives the commune damp winters and summers that stay short of severe heat. Grey spells settle in. Rain is spread thin across every month rather than banked into one season.

The year follows the northern seasons.

How do you get to Pantin?

Three routes cross Pantin. National roadways 2 and 3 run through the commune, the Paris-Strasbourg railway line cuts the same plain, and the canal de l'Ourcq carries the third line of movement toward Paris. The centre of the capital stands a little over six kilometres off.

Aubervilliers, Bobigny, and Romainville are nearer still, and the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie sits within the same short reach.
