Staying in Chughureti puts you on the quieter left bank, a short walk over the river from the old town yet clear of its crowds. David Aghmashenebeli Avenue is the draw, a pedestrian-friendly run of restored 19th-century facades lined with cafes and small hotels. The Marjanishvili metro station connects the district to the rest of Tbilisi.
It suits sightseers who want central access without the steep lanes of the historic core. Most beds sit near the avenue. The northern streets toward Kukia stay residential.

About Chughureti
What are the main landmarks in Chughureti?
The district's own set-piece is the Roman Catholic Saint Peter and Saint Paul's Church, built in the 1870s on Ivane Javakhishvili Street off David Aghmashenebeli Avenue. Nearer the railway lands stands the concrete bulk of the Tbilisi Sports Palace. Most of the heavyweight sights sit across the Mtkvari on Rustaveli Avenue: the Georgian National Museum, its Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia, and the National Gallery of Georgia.
Kashveti Church faces them along the same avenue. Above it all rises the Narikala fortress.
What is the history of Chughureti?
Chughureti grew from farmland on the left bank into a planned quarter after German settlers founded the colony of Neu-Tiflis here in 1818, beside the older village of Kukia. Craftsmen from Swabia laid out its streets in a strict grid parallel to the Mtkvari. By 1824 the colony and the villages around it had been absorbed into Tbilisi.
Armenian, Russian and Georgian families settled alongside the Germans. Their churches still stand. The Roman Catholic Saint Peter and Saint Paul's Church went up on Ivane Javakhishvili Street between 1870 and 1877, and the grand avenue of that colony survives as David Aghmashenebeli Avenue.

The district runs along the left bank of the Mtkvari, facing the old town and the Narikala ridge across the water. David Aghmashenebeli Avenue and the streets branching off it form its grid, laid out parallel to the river. To the south the ground falls toward the railway lands around the Tbilisi Sports Palace.
