What are the main landmarks in Mtatsminda District?
The district's museums line Rustaveli Avenue. The Georgian National Museum, whose flagship building is the Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia, holds the national collections along with the Museum of Soviet Occupation. Nearby stands the National Gallery of Georgia, a short walk along the avenue.
Kashveti Church faces the street in pale stone. Above the Old Town, the Narikala fortress crowns the Sololaki ridge, and the Norashen Holy Mother of God Armenian Church stands in the lanes below.
What is the history of Mtatsminda District?
The district takes its name from Mount Mtatsminda, the Holy Mountain long revered as a place of pilgrimage above the city. Its slopes drew worshippers for centuries. On the ridge across the valley, the Narikala fortress guarded Tbilisi from about the 4th century, and its walls remain among the oldest structures in the capital.
The quarter below took its modern shape in the 19th century, when the city grew and Rustaveli Avenue was laid out as its main thoroughfare. Grand museums that later formed the Georgian National Museum rose along the avenue. Merchant families filled the Sololaki lanes with balconied houses.
Where is Mtatsminda District?
The district lies on the right bank of the Mtkvari, wrapping around the eastern slopes of Mount Mtatsminda. Rustaveli Avenue runs along its lower edge, and the stepped lanes of the Sololaki quarter climb from there toward the Narikala ridge. At its foot spreads the medieval core of Old Tbilisi; higher up, a funicular railway carries passengers to the mountaintop above the city.
