What are the main landmarks in Krtsanisi?
Most of the district's named sights gather along its northwestern edge, where Krtsanisi runs into the old city. The fortress of Narikala looks down from the ridge; across the water, the Metekhi church stands on its cliff above the Mtkvari. Museums line the approach.
The Georgian National Museum, the Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia and the Museum of Soviet Occupation sit within a short walk of one another, joined by Old Tbilisi's churches such as the Norashen Holy Mother of God Armenian Church. Above the river rises the Wedding Palace, a bold work of late-Soviet design.
What is the history of Krtsanisi?
The district takes its name from the Battle of Krtsanisi, fought on this ground in 1795. There the army of Agha Mohammad Khan of Persia overwhelmed the outnumbered troops of King Erekle II of Kartli-Kakheti after several days of fighting. Tbilisi fell soon after.
The city was stormed and burned, and the defeat pushed the weakened kingdom toward Russia, which annexed it within a few years. The battlefield name endured, and it still marks this southeastern reach of the city along the Mtkvari.
Where is Krtsanisi?
The district occupies the southeastern corner of Tbilisi, following the Mtkvari downstream from the old city. Its northwestern edge meets the historic center, near Narikala and the Metekhi church on the cliffs above the water. Streets thin toward the south.
Wooded slopes rise behind the riverside blocks, and the ground climbs away from the Mtkvari as you leave the centre.
