What is the history of Gldani District?
Gldani began as an outlying locality on the northern approaches to Tbilisi, well outside the medieval city. Over the twentieth century it was absorbed into the growing capital and rebuilt as one of its major residential districts. Large housing estates gave the area the shape it still holds.
Avchala developed alongside it as a separate settlement on the same northern edge. The name survives in Avchala Stadium.

Gldani sits in the northern part of Tbilisi, several kilometres out beyond the old town on the far side of the city. The settlement of Avchala lies right alongside it. That closeness is why the local ground shares its name with Avchala Stadium.
Its streets run as broad residential estates, not a tight medieval quarter. It is an outer district. Gldani sits at the northern end of the Tbilisi Metro's Akhmeteli-Varketili Line, bordering Nadzaladevi on the way to the city centre.
