What is the history of Varketili?
The Soviet decades built Varketili. As Tbilisi grew eastward, planners threw up whole estates of prefabricated apartment towers across what had been the edge of the city. The district went in as a dormitory quarter for the Georgian capital, tied to the center by the metro rather than an old street grid.
That origin still shapes its plain, repeating blocks and its distance from the old center of Tbilisi.
Where is Varketili?
Varketili sits at the far eastern edge of Tbilisi, on the outer ring of the city rather than anywhere near its historic core. Old Tbilisi and the city center lie well to the west. Wide roads frame the estates.
Past its blocks, the built-up city thins toward the open ground beyond Tbilisi's outskirts. Varketili marks the southeastern terminus of the Tbilisi Metro's Akhmeteli-Varketili Line, with Samgori the neighbouring district toward the centre.
