A Roman resort stood here before Vesuvius destroyed it. On the hill above the bay the Romans built the town of Stabiae, a place of great seaside villas for the rich of Rome, until the eruption of Vesuvius buried it in ash in the year 79. The villas lay hidden long.
For centuries the frescoed rooms of Stabiae slept under the ash, until they were dug out again and their painted walls seen once more. A castle gave the medieval town its name. In the middle ages a fortress rose over the shore, and the town took the name of the castle on the sea, Castellammare, growing on its springs and its port.
