Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Cesena Cathedral fixes the centre. Rooms in the streets around it put the Diocesan and Cathedral Museum of Cesena, the Fontana Masini and the Loggetta Veneziana within a walk of a few minutes, which covers most of what brings people to the city. The Pinacoteca Comunale di Cesena is on that circuit.
Book here if the stay is short and the plan is the old centre. The hill is the other option. The Abbey of St Maria del Monte and the parco archeologico del Colle Garampo sit above the built-up streets, and a base on that side trades the immediate centre for higher ground and quieter nights.
Walking shoes matter there. Osservanza and Santa Cristina are two more churches on the list. Two addresses stand apart from the old streets: Carisport and the Ippodromo del Savio.
A stay planned around a match or a race day works better from the outer edge of Cesena than from the historic core, where parking and quick exits are harder to come by. Museums fill the days between. The Museo dell'Ecologia, the Museo di storia dell'agricoltura and the Renato Serra Historic House Museum are all inside the comune.

Colle Garampo holds the oldest ground. The parco archeologico del Colle Garampo preserves what excavation has found on the Garampo, which is the high point the rest of Cesena grew below. The Museo archeologico di Cesena keeps the finds.
A cathedral and a diocese followed, and the Diocesan and Cathedral Museum of Cesena holds what the church accumulated over the centuries in which the city took its shape. The centre filled in around the squares. The Fontana Masini gave the city a public fountain, the Loggetta Veneziana carries a Venetian name on a small loggia, and the churches of San Domenico, Sant'Agostino and the Servi filled the streets around them.
Art stayed in the city. The Pinacoteca Comunale di Cesena and the art collection of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena keep the pictures the city has held onto. Faith went uphill as well.
The Abbey of St Maria del Monte and the Osservanza occupy ground away from the crowded lanes, and the Torrione del Nuti survives from the defensive fabric that a town under a hill of this kind kept. Later collections record other lives. The Museo di storia dell'agricoltura and the Museo dell'Ecologia treat farming and the natural world, while the Renato Serra Historic House Museum preserves a house under the name of the man it commemorates.

Cesena lies on temperate ground where the summer sits heavily over the fields of the comune and the winter comes in without much to stop it, the Colle Garampo being too small a rise to change the weather below. Shade is scarce in the squares around the Fontana Masini in July, which is when the Pinacoteca Comunale di Cesena and the Museo archeologico di Cesena earn their keep.

How do you get to Cesena?
Cesena sits in Emilia-Romagna. Arrivals come into a comune that spreads well beyond its old streets, so the first decision is whether to stop in the historic centre near Cesena Cathedral or at the outer edge by Carisport. The Ippodromo del Savio is out that way as well.
Inside the centre, the Fontana Masini, the Loggetta Veneziana and the Torrione del Nuti are close enough together that a car becomes a liability rather than a help.
