Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
The cathedral end is the default. Rooms within reach of Modena Cathedral and the Museums of the Modena Cathedral put the oldest part of the street plan outside the door, and they leave the Galleria Estense and the Civic Museum of Modena to an unhurried walk rather than a journey. The Museo Enzo Ferrari argues for the other side of town.
A stay near it suits a trip organised around engines, and it still leaves San Francesco, San Bartolomeo and the Chiesa del Voto reachable within the same day. The university side is the third option. The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia and the Museo di anatomia di Modena both belong to the university, and a stay pitched toward them turns the day toward teaching collections rather than toward the Estense ones.
Beyond the built-up edge, the Province of Modena spreads into the flat of the Po Valley. Choose by collection, not by street. If you want the Galleria Estense, the Museo Lapidario Estense and the Museo del Risorgimento in one day, the cathedral end is the base; if the Museo Enzo Ferrari is the reason for the trip, take the rooms nearest it.

What is the history of Modena?
No document names the year Modena began. The oldest evidence is dug up rather than handed down: the Parco archeologico Novi Ark keeps excavated ground open inside the city, and the Museo Lapidario Estense holds inscriptions that outlast the buildings they came from. Then the churches take over.
Modena Cathedral sits at the head of a long list that runs through San Francesco, San Bartolomeo, Sant'Agostino, the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pomposa and the Ex Monastero benedettino di San Pietro, each with its own century and patron. The Estense name marks the next layer. It survives in the Galleria Estense and the Museo Lapidario Estense, and the Museums of the Modena Cathedral hold the ecclesiastical record beside them.
The Museo del Risorgimento takes the unification thread, and the Gemma 1786 museum carries a year in its own name. The university runs its own record of study, from the Museo di anatomia di Modena to the Orto Botanico dell'Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, which pairs the city with Reggio Emilia in a single institution. Engines came last.

Where is Modena?
The Po Valley does the shaping. Modena stands on its south side, on the flat of the plain, which is why the built-up area spreads outward instead of climbing anything. Streets stay level.
The Parco archeologico Novi Ark holds a piece of older ground open inside that plain, and the Province of Modena carries the city's name across the country around it.
What is the climate of Modena?
The Po Valley sets the terms. Modena sits on level ground, so the temperate northern year arrives here plainly, with a warm middle and a cold close and little in the way of local relief to complicate either. Gardens keep the count.

How do you get to Modena?
Flat ground makes the approach easy. Modena sits in the open plain of the Po Valley, so every road into it arrives without a climb, and the Province of Modena is crossed rather than entered by anyone travelling the length of Emilia-Romagna. Reggio Emilia shares the university with it.
Once inside, Modena Cathedral is the point everything else is measured from, with the Museo Enzo Ferrari the one destination worth its own leg.
